Meet Lucy!

We love Shelties(Shetland Sheepdogs). We have owned the breed since 1981. They are so a smart and sensitive , not to mention beautiful. Normally we like to have two at a time so that when one goes we still have one. Our present dog, Katy, is now 11yrs. old. Before her was Bonnie, who has been gone for 2-1/2yrs. now. Lucy will be our 5th Sheltie since 1981(our first dog was a shepherd/lab mix, also a sweetie).
We've been looking for about a year but the breed isn't as popular in New England as other breeds. So, FINALLY! we found puppies up near Laconia...12 of them! We wanted a female and on the smaller side, and God saved one for us. Out of 12 puppies (2 litters), there were only 3 females and we were told that only one female was left unspoken for. But when we went to the breeder last week, she said one of the buyers had "changed their minds"( personally, I think God helped them to change their minds because he was saving Lucy just for us) and they bought a male instead. Of the two females left, one was the tiniest of all 12 puppies. She had been born small enough that she couldn't compete with the bigger ones when nursing, so the breeder hand fed her. This caused her to be more trusting and snuggly with humans. When we picked her up at 6wks, she weighed all of about one pound. So...next week we bring Lucy home (at 8wks. old). We have named her in honor of Lucy in The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S.Lewis, for her innocence and child-like trust, and also the name Lucy means "light" or "light bearer".
You can be sure that more updates and photos on Lucy will follow, it will be a blessing to have a puppy again. We're hoping Katy will do well with the newcomer, but not really concerned...all of our Shelties have adapted well to each other.
